Bachelor of Education (Teaching)
BED programme resources to support Associate TeachersWithin the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Primary qualification, there are three EDPRAC (practicum) courses, each comprising on-campus sessions and a school-based practicum placement.
There are four practicum placements – two in the first year for EDPRAC 100 (a two-week orientation in the first semester, followed by EDPRAC 100, a five-week placement in the second semester – commonly in the same school); a six-week placement in the second year for EDPRAC 204; and an eleven-week placement in the third year for EDPRAC 304 (comprising 3 weeks at the beginning of the school year followed by a further eight weeks later in the year at the same school).
Practicum learning outcomes are based upon four recurring themes:
- forming professional relationships – including effective communication
- focusing on purposeful teaching and learning
- being a professional teacher in Aotearoa/New Zealand
- understanding the complexity of the teacher’s role and the educational context
EDPRAC 100
Builds relationships an established professional communication with ākonga and colleagues. Engages in collaborative teaching and learning. Explores the role of the professional teacher/kaiako through an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.”
EDPRAC 204 Practicum 2
Develops professional knowledge, skills and dispositions required for effective teaching and learning through an inquiry-based approach. Engages in noticing, recognising and responding to diverse learners. Practises and reflects on skills necessary to manage complex learning environments.
EDPRAC 304 Practicum 3
Establishes and sustains culturally responsive, ethical, learner-focused relationships with ākonga, colleagues and whanau in complex environments. Utilises an inquiry-based approach to demonstrate competency in professional knowledge, and the skills and dispositions required for effective teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand.
